Jesus: The Light

Have you ever been afraid or are currently afraid of the dark? Why or why not?

When you walk into a room with no windows and the lights are off-can you see anything? No, because it's dark!

Now, what happens when you turn on the light? The darkness goes away, now why is that? Because the darkness cannot be overcome by light!
Today's verse is John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
You already thought about darkness and how it makes you feel. Sometimes scared, sometimes confused, and sometimes lonely. When there’s darkness all around us, light gives us direction to follow the right path. Light gives us security and makes us feel less lonely. Light helps us to see clearly.
Suppose I turned on a flashlight and pointed it at various objects in a dark room while asking you “What do you see?” After looking at several objects and hearing your responses, I could ask, “How did you know what I wanted you to see?” You would probably answer that the light directed your eyes. The light helped you to see each object better. Light gives us direction.
We know that people of the world live in darkness, they do not have the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Jesus declares that he is the only way when he said, "I am the light of the world." He invites others to follow him and he promises that they will not walk in darkness. He promises direction. Walking in darkness means that you cannot see where you are going and you are lost, right? Imagine walking around your house at nighttime with the lights off, it would be a difficult task, right? You might stumble or bump into things or even hurt yourself. But, if you find a light switch-what happens? You can see and you will know where you are going. It's the same with Christ as our guide. He is our light. With Him, you are not lost-you are found. He is the light that gives us direction and helps us to know where we are going.
Wanna know something really cool? You are children of light! What does that mean? Because Christ lives in us, this means that his light lives in us too(Matthew 5:14). We demonstrate his light by loving our neighbor, loving God, obeying his commandments, and sharing about Jesus to others. So let's remember Jesus is the light and we are called to shine bright on the earth to bring glory to Him!
